Western Digital boosts HDD capacity with 32TB

In an era where data consumption is at an all-time high, storage solutions must evolve to keep pace. Western Digital has risen to the challenge by increasing the capacity of its spinning disk hard disk drives (HDDs) with the introduction of groundbreaking new models. The company has successfully pushed the boundaries of storage capacity by adding an 11th platter, resulting in two impressive new drives: the 26TB DC and the 32TB SMR DCH. The standard recording 26TB DC model is engineered for traditional data storage needs, providing a reliable solution for businesses looking to store vast amounts of data. Its 26TB capacity allows enterprise users to increase their storage efficiency while enjoying the dependable performance associated with Western Digital products. This HDD is especially valuable for data centers where large-scale storage is essential for optimizing workloads and maintaining seamless operations. On the other hand, the 32TB SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) DCH model takes storage innovation to a higher level. SMR technology is a game-changer in the realm of data storage. This design technique involves overlapping recording tracks in a manner akin to the construction of clinker boats, where each new track slightly masks the previous one. The result is a denser data layout that allows for greater storage capacity within the same physical space. However, this innovative recording method does come with a trade-off. While the 32TB SMR DCH can read data effectively, rewriting becomes a more challenging process compared to traditional recording methods. This is due to the shingled design, which can lead to slower write speeds as the overlapping tracks require more sophisticated management. Nevertheless, for many applications, the advantages of increased density and storage capacity outweigh these limitations.
